Texas AFFF Contamination

Usage of AFFF

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) has been used for over 50 years to fight petroleum fires. The reason this foam is so effective is because it contains chemicals which are found in products like non-stick cookware, water repellant clothing, stain resistant fabrics and carpets, and products which generally resist grease. These class of chemicals are called PFAS and the specific PFAS chemicals in AFFF are PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid).

AFFF Side Effects

PFAS chemicals are known as ‘forever chemicals’ due to the fact that they are non-biodegradable. They are difficult to naturally break apart due to their strong carbon bonds. When chemicals which cannot naturally break apart enters the body, the results can be fatal. The following side effects have been linked to exposure to AFFF:

  • Kidney cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid disease
  • Liver cancer
  • Ulcerative colitis
